Finding Support in the Wake of the Lapu-Lapu Tragedy

Over the weekend, the devastating tragedy at the Lapu-Lapu celebration has left a heavy weight on many hearts — including mine. As a Filipina-Canadian, I’ve been deeply shaken by the news. I cannot imagine the depth of pain and fear those directly impacted or who witnessed the events are carrying.

My 21-year-old daughter had planned to attend the event, but a late work shift kept her from going — a hidden blessing I am profoundly grateful for. Still, my heart is broken for the families and community members now enduring unimaginable grief and trauma from this senseless act of violence.

If you are struggling, please know that you are not alone. I encourage you to reach out — whether it’s to me, a trusted friend, a crisis line, or another counsellor. There are resources available, and you deserve support during this time.

In response to the tragedy, I am offering three free one-on-one counselling sessions and subsequent sessions at a reduced fee for anyone directly impacted. I am also holding an online support group on Tuesday evenings at 5:30pm. Go to my bookings page to book a one-on-one session or to attend the support group.

I also want to highlight the many other resources being shared within our community:The Filipino Emergency Response Resources hub has compiled a growing list of therapists offering free or low-cost services, as well as exercises and self-care strategies to help you through this time. You can access it here: tr.ee/VanFilEmergency.

Please take care of yourselves. Reach out. You don’t have to carry this alone.
